30 years ago, in January of 1989, a small seed of a Bible study began in my north Atlanta, Georgia neighborhood. Little did I know that it would grow and multiply into a global movement. On May 5, 2010 God gave me the vision for NBS2GO: Neighborhood Bible Study 2GO. In 2013, nbs2go.com was launched.

What started with women inviting neighbors to study Scripture in their homes has spread to men, couples, students, co-workers, friends, and family - gathering to discover God’s life transforming truths. Bible study groups have expanded from neighborhoods to workplaces, coffee shops, dorm rooms, senior living centers, and more.

The One Question That Revolutionized Loving My Neighbors

NBS2GO Blog | Global Staff Women - Neighborhood Walk to ShoolI’ll never forget the day my husband shared a new ministry principle with me. He suggested, “What if you stopped doing things for people and did things with people?”

That single question revolutionized what it meant for me to truly love my neighbor in ways that included both acts of service and also a relational commitment that changed my neighborhood forever. That year, I began to gather the neighbors together based on what our family already did each day. I was going to live with my neighbor, not simply do tasks for them.

How will you answer "the knock?"

door-1274px

Throughout the year we seek moments with our neighbors to show God’s love and perhaps to invite them into our homes. We may have asked a neighbor several times to come over and they have never accepted. Yet for Halloween, many of these same neighbors will likely walk up to our doors and ring the bells. May we open our eyes to the possibilities…

“Love is the very nature of God, and as believers, we share His nature. That’s why love is so important. Our expression of love is evidence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. True love results in action.” Janice Mathers

Housewarming Gift Ideas

Here's a fun idea for you and your neighbors!Plan ahead by dropping your friends a note with the idea and a list of things that can go into the jars.  Schedule a date, (at your regularly scheduled NBS would be perfect!)  Gather the supplies and get creative! You can make several at a time and have them on hand for the new neighbors when they move in - and even for those that are moving out...

Some items for the jars could be :  measuring tape, mini hammer,  picture hangers, 6-in-1 screwdriver set, 2 extension cords (white and brown which would blend better on their wood floors or white walls), line level, or kitchen towels. You could even paint the lids with chalk board paint! Add a bow and, TA DA... Blessings abound. What would you fill the jars with?

Love Your Neighbor As Yourself?

"Love your neighbor as yourself.". Yes, but how? What comes to mind when you read this verse?  (Mark 12:31) What does it look like to accomplish this!  What stirs within you when you hear Christ say this is the second greatest command?I often feel inadequate. Don't you?  Sometimes certain "neighbors" come to mind that I have a hard time loving. I think of circumstances where I have been misunderstood and have a strained relationship with a "neighbor."  Or a "neighbor" has said something or done something that has left me drained or wounded. These are all valid situations.  I am sure you have a list too!But what I would rather draw attention to with this verse is actually initiating love to all my neighbors.  How about focusing on trusting God to reach them with His message.  Love is active.  Love strives towards someone.  Love would rather be guilty of moving towards someone rather than being passive.   Yes!  Amen!  But how do we do this?Start with prayer.  Ask the Lord to give you a heart for your neighbors.  Pray for them by name when you know it.  Pray for their children.  Pray for their work.  Pray for God's protection and blessing in their lives.  Pray the Gospel would be heard in their houses. And then what?  _____________________________. You fill in the blank.  As you are praying,  my guess is that God will give you ideas to communicate His love to them. He will whisper to you to write a note to someone. He will purposefully have you run into another who needs encouragement.  He will want you to take cookies to a young family.  How about starting a neighborhood Bible study?   I still remember the peanut butter pie that we received 9 years ago when we moved in....and who brought it?....my godly, loving neighbor who reached out to us with Christ's love. And she is my co-leader in my neighborhood Bible study!Love takes action. How will you "love" your neighbor today?  How have you loved your neighbor?  Love, JoanTo subscribe to this blog, click here and enter your email on the right, then click “subscribe”

Blessing Bags

Blessing bags are a great service project to prepare together within your NBS.  One blessing bag is kept by each person.  In the future, whenever an NBS member sees someone in need during day-to-day commutes or in travels, they may bless the individual (or family) with the bag.  This is a neat answer to those we see holding signs, asking for money or help. The goal is for each of member to leave with at least one bag.  Following is a list of supplies.  Divide the chosen items amongst your members.  Have each person bring the appropriate number of items.  For example, 10 bars of soap if there are 10 members in the study.  Many of these items can be purchased at a dollar or discount store.  With each person remitting their items, then assemble the bags so that every bag contains one of each item on the list.  Simple!Gallon size Ziplock bagsItems to go in the bags, such as: Chap Stick Packages of tissues Toothbrush and toothpaste Comb Soap Trail mix Granola bars Crackers Pack of gum Band aids Mouthwash Coins (could be used to make a phone call, or purchase a food item) Hand wipes You could also put in a warm pair of socks, and maybe a Starbucks gift card Small Bible Bible verses on paper or cardsDo you have nay thing to add to this list? have you participated in this service project before? Tell us about it!

“From the Lord comes deliverance.  May your blessing be on your people."   Psalm 3:8 NIV

Adrienne's Story: My Whole Life Would be Suspect

There was no way I was going to a neighborhood Bible Study! These people were radicals. They would no doubt judge me. I didn’t own a Bible, and I certainly wouldn’t be able to find my way around one if I did. All my life prior to Bible Study attendance would be suspect! I was almost 40 years old, had everything anybody would rightfully need in life, and I was miserable. The self-help aisles at Barnes and Noble weren’t helping. I sensed I was being pushed hard by the Holy Spirit to give it a try. I see that now, only in retrospect. So I went.None of my fears were founded. The group of women I met that first year were polite, patient and concerned about the spirituality of others. Nobody attempted to convict me on my prior lack of Bible knowledge or church attendance. There were no critics as I flipped back and forth through my Bible trying to locate the proper Book. No one commented on me or my family’s spiritual life prior to that first year of the study.I cannot begin to estimate the value our Neighborhood Bible Study has brought to my life and to my family’s lives. There is no doubt the Lord intended for me to be in that environment to come into a personal relationship with Christ. Despite having the worst of preconceived notions, I was to take away Truth – life-altering Truth. Jesus is likely delighted to not be the stern taskmaster and cosmic scorekeeper anymore. My family now knows the Lord as the Loving Father that He is. My husband and I have grown in faith together in the years since I started attending the study. All three of my children now know Jesus and have the opportunity to live a life intertwined with Him, which I never had. I am certain that my grandchildren will have the opportunity to grow up with Jesus.Did I mention that the woman who ultimately showed me the way to Christ actually asked me often to attend the study, through at least two years of carpooling? I am eternally glad that I finally said yes.Adrienne OsbourneTo subscribe to this blog, click here and enter your email on the right, then click “subscribe.”

Jan's Story: My Heart Began to Heal

Following the tragic loss of one of my children in 1992, I was invited by a neighbor to attend Debbie McGoldrick’s NBS. Through understanding God’s presence and purpose in trials and receiving the encouragement and love of neighbors, my heart began to heal. I know personally the power of NBS to change lives and grow women in their faith journey. I began an NBS when I moved to a new neighborhood in 1998, and I am passionate about making NBS available to women at all stages of life. Whether they are exploring the Bible for the first time or desiring to grow in their faith, women love to meet in the comfort of a neighbor’s home to study and discover together God’s life-transforming Word.“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 NIVTo watch Jan tell her story in her own words; click here:  Jan's Story To subscribe to this blog, click here and enter your email on the right, then click “subscribe.”

Start With Prayer

So you want to start something, but don't know how, or where to begin, right?  Well... let's start right here!Praying for Yourself  Pray that God will give you His vision, His plan for your neighbors, and that you will see people and their needs as He sees them. Pray that God will grow your heart for those who don’t know Christ and give you a desire to reach them through an NBS. Pray that you will be intentional about your own spiritual growth, allowing God to work in and through you. Pray for God’s guidance, equipping, and empowerment to move forward in what He is calling you to do.As important as prayer is to the foundation and beginning of your NBS, your personal spiritual growth is just as important to sustaining your NBS.In his acclaimed book on communication, Dallas Seminary Professor Dr. Howard Hendricks says it best: “The effective teacher always teaches from the overflow of a full life. If you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.” Mother Theresa reflects the same message: “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil into it.”Our spiritual growth as leaders and facilitators of our NBS allows God to use us to model and encourage our members to pursue a relationship with Christ more intentionally. To be effective in encouraging our women to grow, we must be challenging ourselves by practicing spiritual disciplines beyond studying our NBS material – spiritual disciplines such as daily Bible and devotional reading and spending time with God in prayer and listening.“You see, effective teaching comes only through a changed person,” says Hendricks. “The more you change, the more you become an instrument of change in the lives of others.” To read more about getting started, click HERE....To subscribe to this blog, click here and enter your email on the right, then click “subscribe”

I Don't Have Granite Countertops...

I don't have granite countertops, I can't lead a neighborhood Bible study...There!  I said it!  Doesn't that sound crazy?  Oh! my list of excuses was many... I don't know the Bible like I should. I haven't been to seminary. I am nervous. I don't have the gift of teaching. My house isnt perfectly decorated.  The list goes on, and on....Yet in the not so ignorable part of my heart lingered these words, "Who will go for Me?"I live in the "South."  Most of the women around me have lovely decorated homes.  My neighbor's home has been featured in Southern Living Magazine!  To invite women into my home felt intimidating.  My thoughts about granite countertops were very real.  But deeper still, were my thoughts about my sweet neighbors and friends living right here next to me. "Who will go for me?"  And I said, "here I am Lord, send me."Send me with all my insecurities.  Send me with all my flaws.  Send me with my shortcomings.  Send me with my shallow worries about my kitchen.  I can't give them living water.  You can.  I can't give them forgiveness.  You can.  I can't bring life change.  You can. And you can use me.  And if the Lord can use me He can use you! What are your barriers?  Spoken or unspoken?  Real or shallow? Joan

Blessed for my Faithfulness

Blessed For my Faithfulness

You may be asking…so why would I continue to lead a study if only one or two women are coming?  Isn’t that a waste of my time?  Good question!  After all, you are busy, right?  You could be doing other things.  You could be making a bigger impact somewhere else.  Maybe your church could use you to teach a class or organize a mission.  Maybe your pastor needs your advice on sermons or church discipline or what is going on in the children’s programs.  Maybe … well, you get the point.   So, why indeed would you continue to lead for only a few?May I suggest that your faithfulness with a few, may lead to God’s biggest blessings for you?  That is what happened to me…I began leading an evening study in my neighborhood.   We met in our clubhouse, around a small table, just the three of us!  Occasionally, there were four of us; once even five.  But, most weeks it was just us three: Betsy, Mary, and me.   And we studied and prayed together and loved each other through that season.  But, that wasn’t the big blessing; that was just the byproduct of being in the Word together.   The big blessing came later, when I could no longer meet in the evenings because of my children’s various sports schedules.I did not want to leave Betsy and Mary without an evening study to plug into, so I began looking for one for them!  (No, I didn’t tell them I was doing this.)  I found one in a nearby neighborhood, and in doing so, I met a woman who would later introduce me to the Pastor of an orphanage that I have come to adopt!  Yes, I have adopted an orphanage...  Crazy, right?   Well, not if you know our God.  He had told me years earlier that that was what I was to do—adopt an orphanage—which is another story for another day.  The point here is that if I had not continued to lead just the two, and had I not come to love them and feel obligated towards them, I would not have gone looking for another study in another neighborhood,  and I would not have met this particular woman at this particular time, and I would not have found my orphanage.   Of course, God could have hooked us up another way, but He chose to bless my faithfulness by leading me to them this way.   And, in leading me to them this way, I can rest in the assurance that this is God’s call and purpose for me, and that is the biggest blessing in the world! So, will He give you a whole orphanage full of children to love?  Probably not.  He has something else in store for you!  Maybe something bigger!  And, it may just be the Bible study group you have always dreamed about---one like mine, filled with wonderful, women who love the Lord and each other.   Because if you are faithful with a few, He will put you in charge of many.Lisa

What is NBS2GO?

NBS2GO = Neighbor Bible Studies 2GO - nbs2go.com is simply the packaging of ideas, resources, and inspiration to equip believers to launch and multiply Bible study groups.

What's the big deal about a Bible study group?

Like a one-room schoolhouse, a Bible study group brings together a wide range of seekers and Christ-followers to study, discuss, and encourage one another toward life application of God’s Word. This blending of spiritual maturity levels creates a dynamic, life-transforming community. Friendships are formed, and group members are equipped to minister to others where they do life. Life transformation and multiplication!
