Crazy Quilts and a Master Weaver - Revised Bible Study

Crazy_quilt_1280x500

QUILT was the first Bible study I wrote for my neighborhood Bible study group. My desire was to create a simple tool that they could use on a weekly basis to personally mine nuggets of truth and treasures from God’s Word. Instead of listening to me teach every week, we began to gather and share the discoveries and insights that our personal teacher, the Holy Spirit had revealed to us.

As I was praying and waiting on God to guide me – the word “quilt” came to mind. My immediate response was “That’s crazy!” Just then the image of a cherished family heirloom came into my mind. This keepsake was my mother’s child-sized bathrobe made from her great-grandmother’s handstitched Crazy Quilt. I repeated in my mind, Crazy Quilt….and so the study began to take shape.

167 Countries, Six Continents, and Counting...nbs2go.com Re-launch 2019

2019_nbs2go_header_1920x750

30 years ago, in January of 1989, a small seed of a Bible study began in my north Atlanta, Georgia neighborhood. Little did I know that it would grow and multiply into a global movement. On May 5, 2010 God gave me the vision for NBS2GO: Neighborhood Bible Study 2GO. In 2013, nbs2go.com was launched.

What started with women inviting neighbors to study Scripture in their homes has spread to men, couples, students, co-workers, friends, and family - gathering to discover God’s life transforming truths. Bible study groups have expanded from neighborhoods to workplaces, coffee shops, dorm rooms, senior living centers, and more.

Am I Seeking God Only for Answers or for Who He Is?

I often wonder…. what if my desire to listen to God equaled His longing to speak personally with me? Listening prayer for me is simply being still in God’s presence, anticipating His voice, recording His words, impressions, or pictures, and then responding in love, faith and obedience to what He whispers. It’s amazing — I always receive exactly what my heart is longing for — sweet companionship, fresh encouragement, and specific guidance. I’m praying that this excerpt from my “Listening Journal” will encourage you to begin a practice of listening to God. –Debbie

I’m away at the Lake, seeking focused prayer time, while a bumble bee circles my head.  I hear God saying – “Bumble bees are like distractions. I have a Plexiglas fortress around you, that moves as you NBS2GO Fresh Blog | Busy Beemove.  Fear not the bumblebee’s distractions. They will not harm you – present but not potent.

Stressing out is not what you need to do. It expends energy and increases the intensity of the distraction.

See all distractions for what they are – move forward, don’t stop and pre-occupy yourself with them.

Jailbreak: Set Free to be Free

A leg. jailbreak 2

Most prisoners in jail, regardless of the number of hours or years locked up, dream of the time they will be set free.

Imagine an inmate sitting in a prison cell with his back facing the door.  A guard unexpectedly unlocks his door and informs the prisoner that he is free to leave. Yet he remains unmoved, staring intently at the walls around him.  How strange! Did he not hear or simply refuse to believe the guard’s word? Did he feel unworthy of such a gift? Was he fearful of what lay beyond the door that was standing wide open? Or does he actually like his prison? In order for the inmate to experience freedom, he must believe the guard is speaking the truth, then stand up and walk out through the open door. It seems ridiculous doesn’t it? To be set free, yet to CHOOSE bondage!Christ has offered us the gift of freedom, but so often we linger behind the bars that have been foraged by our past mistakes, or present worries, or possibly even our projected fears about the future. For past mistakes: God’s promise of forgiveness frees us from the penalty and power of sin’s enslavement.  “You have no obligation whatsoever to do what your sinful nature urges you to do….but if through the power of the Holy Spirit you turn from it, and its evil deeds, you will live free.” Romans 8:12-13 For present worries: God’s promise of peace frees us from all worry. “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God your need and thank Him for all He has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:5-6For future fears: God’s promise of answered prayer frees us from all fear. “I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me, freeing me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy!” Psalm 34:4-5Are you in jail? Linger no longer! A legitimate jailbreak is yours! Take God at His word and, empowered by faith, walk out of your unlocked cell block and enjoy past, present and future freedom by Christ, in Christ and through Christ, moment-by-moment.It is time to walk free!  Find more Fresh Stories here!Debbie McGoldrick is the founder of NBS2GO and blessed to be married to Mark and the adoptive mother of Melissa and Matt. Seven Weeks, 12,000 Miles and Eight Flat Tires

Alaska or Bust 3

When I was a child, our family loved to travel, camp and explore God’s creation. One summer we had one of those vacations of a lifetime!  For seven and a half weeks, we traveled 3,000 miles from Michigan to Alaska and back. Mid-summer, the four of us piled into our red station wagon with a hand-made sign, “Alaska or Bust” proudly displayed in the back window. We drove north through Michigan into Canada where we began our trek to Alaska on the hard-packed gravel road called the “Al-Can Highway.”

If You Don't Come Apart, You Will Come Apart

Come Apart 2
During these days of a more relaxed summer schedule, we wanted to republish Debbie's post about "Coming Apart" and spending time alone with God. Enjoy!I often wonder ... what if my desire to listen to God equaled His longing to speak personally with me? Listening prayer for me is simply being still in God’s presence, anticipating His voice, recording His words, impressions, or pictures, and then responding in love, faith and obedience to what He whispers. It’s absolutely amazing — I always receive exactly what my heart is longing for — sweet companionship, fresh encouragement and specific guidance. I’m praying that this excerpt from my “Listening Journal” will encourage you to begin a practice of listening to God. –DebbieLISTEN.Mark 5:16 says, “Jesus often withdrew into the wilderness to pray.” The disciples would wake up, and He’d be gone. They knew where He was, usually on the Mount of Olives. They knew what He was doing; praying, speaking with and listening to His Father.I think it’s interesting that the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. His way of praying looked and felt different. It wasn’t like anything they had learned or experienced. They knew there was listening involved because Jesus often told them what He heard. For the past 40 years, I have enjoyed a disciplined rhythm of solitude - spending extended time alone with the Lord. This time is free-flowing but often includes worship, Bible reading, meditating and studying, journaling, praying and more recently, listening. How often I used to “pray about everything” as the passage in Philippians instructs us, without waiting to hear answers to my questions, counsel for my problems, wisdom for my decisions or guidance for my day. I have to be honest; it’s hard for me to sit still. But when I am quiet and determined to listen, I am absolutely amazed at what I hear and the intimacy it has created in my relationship with Christ. It was during a listening prayer that God taught me the principle of “Coming Apart.” On August 29, 2013, I wrote out in my Quiet Time journal a verse that stopped me in my tracks. “The apostles were at the Mount of Olives when this happened.” (Acts 1:12) I like to ask questions when I study. What is this referring to? The next verses describe Jesus’ ascension into heaven from the Mount of Olives. It was His personal place of worship, prayer and listening. At that moment I felt immediately drawn to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN.Copied from my Listening Journal is what I heard God whisper to me:Come apart, come to Me.       Intentionally set aside time to be alone with Me, to worship, pray, and listen       both to My written and whispered Word. Be confident and expect to ascend       from this time and place, no longer limited in your heart and mind to what’s       earthly and temporal. You will be set free, unleashed, to walk in My power,       My will and assignments designed perfectly for you. Come apart expecting to ascend – Jesus did! If you don’t come apart, you will come apart. You will be captured and      grounded by your feelings and thoughts about how incapable, unworthy      and inadequate you feel you are. Whenever your eyes are on yourself, your      circumstances or projected outcomes, you will be paralyzed by worry,      fear, doubt and unbelief. The enemy of your soul is out to ...                   Kill your faith with fear and worry                           Steal your faith with doubt                                   Destroy your faith with unbelief     But I have come that you might have life – abundantly ... living ascended. (John 10:10)     Remember My constant reminder, ‘You are not in over your head,     I have personally invited you to walk on the water.’  Ascend by coming apart with Me!Yes, I hear your heart say, ‘I want to ascend from my place of coming apart with the Father, like Jesus ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives -- the very place He came apart with His Father, our Father.’  Yes you can, and you will. My promise to you, my daughter, is as you come apart (John 15, abide in Me and My Words abide in you) you will live ascended. Do you ever feel the need to Come Apart, lest you come apart? What's stopping you from taking time to be with God?

My joy My peace My patience My kindness My gentleness My goodness My faithfulness My self-controlBreathe in deeply every morning, every hour, every moment of your day – taking in the awareness of My presence and My love. Fill your heart to capacity with Me, My presence and My love. It will push out any and every thing that is hiding. Anything that: Disturbs your peace and security Destroys your courage and strength Distracts you from loving Me and loving your neighborsKeeping it Simple – there you have it – just breathe! Think of everything that comes with My presence and My love. It’s everything you need – nothing lacking. My Word and whispers speak loud and clear. The shouts of truth and "shhhhs" of tranquility can only be heard when you are listening to hear and obey. When you breathe in truth (oxygen) from my Written and Living Word, My will and My ways will flow through you to others. Without the flow of oxygen to your lungs, physically the results are crippling – like a choke-hold causing one to flail, panic and fall into unconsciousness. As you breathe in – putting on your oxygen mask first – then you can reach out to those in need around you, those in need of My presence and My love, and help them breathe in My truth, My Living and Written Word. The mission of NBS2GO is my mandate and mission for every believer … Loving God. Loving Neighbors.Keep your walk with Me fresh like your experience right now, sitting on the deck after a night of rain, by Keeping it Simple:  breathe deep, breathe in and out ... repeat!

Does the Way You Worship Count?

WONDERS of WORSHIP 3

What comes to mind when you think of WORSHIP…. beautiful stained glass windows, the order of a church service or the raising of hands with singing? I wonder how many different expressions of WORSHIP God receives from His children around the world. But really, could blowing kisses and giving peanut butter sandwiches be two WONDERS of WORSHIP?

When our son Matt was four years old he would blow kisses to the ceiling after bedtime prayers. We thought it was adorable, but never once had a passing thought of it being an expression of WORSHIP. Years later I was doing a word study on WORSHIP and was awestruck by one definition - “a directed kiss.” I stared at the page and cried; utterly amazed that Matt had WORSHIPED from his heart at such an early age! Blowing kisses to God every night ... yes, that is one of the WONDERS OF WORSHIP!Our daughter Melissa regularly walked her dog through City Park with a peanut butter sandwich tucked into her backpack to give a homeless man she had befriended. One Sunday while WORSHIPING, I was filled with sadness because Melissa no longer attended church. As tears ran down my face I saw -- as though I were peeking from behind a tree -- the sweetness of her smile as she reached out to her friend in kindness and gave him a peanut butter sandwich.God whispered in my heart….she walked/WORSHIPED Me by loving and giving to one of the “least of these.”I was so convicted by my small, limited view of WORSHIP.  Before moving away, Melissa took one last walk. Instead of giving a sandwich, she gave her homeless friend her backpack full snacks and supplies. He was tearful, and I cried too as I listened to her share her WONDER OF WORSHIP.If blowing kisses and peanut butter sandwiches qualify, what are the WONDERS OF WORSHIP surrounding you?Find more Fresh Stories here!Debbie McGoldrick is the founder of NBS2GO and blessed to be married to Mark and the adoptive mother of Melissa and Matt. Flashlight: Stuffed Tight or Shining Bright?

Flashlight 4

I love to use visuals to demonstrate Biblical truths. In fact, I like the suspense and curiosity it creates as it keeps the girls guessing as to how the visual relates to our passage of study.  Holding a flashlight in my hand I asked my neighborhood Bible study gals, “What is a flashlight’s purpose?”

Immediately, the consensus was unanimous.“It is a portable, battery-powered light used when it is dark inside a home or building or when it’s too dark outside to see.”What they did not know was that for this illustration, I had filled the flashlight’s battery compartment with several items: jewelry, matchbox car, mini mirror, coins and candy. Proceeding, I handed the flashlight to one of the group members and asked her to turn it on. To her surprise, it did not work. I responded with, “Hum, wonder what the problem is?”I asked her to unscrew the top. The group’s curiosity grew as she dumped out all of the items she discovered inside. I enjoyed watching individuals in the group as they attempted to figure out the point I intended to make.I read a famous quote by the French mathematician, philosopher and physicist, Blaise Pascal. “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man, which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.”I held the empty flashlight in one hand and three size D batteries in the other. I pointed out that we were all born empty like the flashlight. Just as the flashlight cannot fulfill its purpose of providing light without removing the contents and replacing it with batteries, so we will not live out our designed purposes without being emptied of sin and filled with Christ Himself.Based on Ezekiel 36:15-27, when someone becomes a Christian, his heart of stone “trades spaces” with a new heart of flesh. II Corinthians 4:17 reaffirms this, “Those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!” I continued and shared with the group that at the point of salvation, the “once and for all” switch was made. Their sins were removed as far as the east is from the west. Christ came into their lives and their hearts changed instantaneously. But Scripture also teaches that our “earth suit,” which the mind is a vital part of, does not. Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to or copy the behavior and customs of the world, but let God transform you into a new person by renewing your mind.”While I unscrewed the top of the flashlight and dropped coins in, I said, “Conforming can be compared to filling our lives with stuff which interrupts the flow of Christ’s light from shining through. Transformation takes place as we renew our minds through reading, studying, obeying and applying Scripture. Our lives need to be emptied of the world’s thinking and replaced with the truths of God’s Word.”Consider the things we fill ourselves with: marriage, children, material possessions and much more. We should never be content with these alone. That is “stuff” in the battery compartment. We need the battery…the Living and written Word of God.Find more Fresh Stories here!Debbie McGoldrick is the founder of NBS2GO and blessed to be married to Mark and the adoptive mother of Melissa and Matt. What is NBS2GO?

NBS2GO = Neighbor Bible Studies 2GO - nbs2go.com is simply the packaging of ideas, resources, and inspiration to equip believers to launch and multiply Bible study groups.

What's the big deal about a Bible study group?

Like a one-room schoolhouse, a Bible study group brings together a wide range of seekers and Christ-followers to study, discuss, and encourage one another toward life application of God’s Word. This blending of spiritual maturity levels creates a dynamic, life-transforming community. Friendships are formed, and group members are equipped to minister to others where they do life. Life transformation and multiplication!
