Aunt Donna

“Blessed to be a Blessing”

My Aunt Donna was a pastor’s wife, married to the love of her life, Uncle Al, for more than 70 years. I know you are not to have favorites in a family, but she is one of mine!

As a child, I remember playing for hours in their third-story attic and basement cellar. I can still smell the Lilies of the Valley that surrounded the big oak tree and feel myself twisting and turning on the old tire swing.

What I remember most about Aunt Donna was how she contagiously lived out her life’s motto: Blessed to be a Blessing.”

The word blessed means to “multiply.” In Genesis 1, God blessed the plants, creatures and man by saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, increase and fill the earth.”

Mark 6:41 says “Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven and asked God’s blessing on the food.”  You know the rest of the story: 5,000 men, plus women and children, were fed and each of the 12 disciples took a full basket home with him.

In the same way, Aunt Donna multiplied and increased her blessings by giving them away.

Daily, she blessed the Lord in her personal devotions. Words of blessing and kindness flowed freely from her grateful heart. She intentionally looked for ways to meet the needs of her family, congregation and community by using her blessings of time, talent and treasures in selfless service.

Never once during her 95+ years of life did I hear her complain….she was too busy blessing the Lord and others!

Stop for a minute and list your abundance of blessings. God has blessed so that we can be a blessing to others. Who and how will you bless someone today?

Genesis 1:28;  26:12;  28:3-4;  Mark 6:30-44;  Acts 20:35
