Praying for Yourself

You already have God’s heart for your neighbors. Here are ways to pray that God will nourish that vision:

  • Pray that God will give you His vision, His plan for your neighbors, and that you will see people and their needs as He sees them.
  • Pray that God will grow your heart for those who don’t know Christ and give you a desire to reach them through an NBS.
  • Pray that you will be intentional about your own spiritual growth, allowing God to work in and through you.
  • Pray for God’s guidance, equipping, and empowerment to move forward in what He is calling you to do.

As important as prayer is to the foundation and beginning of your NBS, your personal spiritual growth is just as important to sustaining your NBS.

In his acclaimed book on communication, Dallas Seminary Professor Dr. Howard Hendricks says it best: “The effective teacher always teaches from the overflow of a full life. If you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.” Mother Theresa reflects the same message: “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil into it.”

Our spiritual growth as leaders and facilitators of our NBS allows God to use us to model and encourage our members to pursue a relationship with Christ more intentionally. To be effective in encouraging our women to grow, we must be challenging ourselves by practicing spiritual disciplines beyond studying our NBS material – spiritual disciplines such as daily Bible and devotional reading and spending time with God in prayer and listening.

“You see, effective teaching comes only through a changed person,” says Hendricks. “The more you change, the more you become an instrument of change in the lives of others.”

Praying for Your Neighbors

Jesus defined our neighbors very broadly – whomever God places in your path and in your heart of ministry. They may be people whom you live by or have contact with in your relational networks. If you don’t pray for them, who will?

  • Begin today praying for your neighbors. Your prayers invite God to open hearts and doors and move His Spirit into your areas of influence to transform lives and families.
  • Enlist a friend who may be interested in helping with your NBS to pray with you.
  • Use your neighborhood or work directory and pray through a section at a time.

Praying for Your Neighborhood

Prayer Walking is one of the most effective and valuable tools we have found for committing your NBS to God’s supernatural power and purposes, trusting in His promise in Joshua 1:3, “I will give you every place where you set your foot.” Lift your neighbors to Christ through prayer walking as you walk and/or drive through the streets of your neighborhood.

  1. Make a plan to begin prayer walking on a regular basis.
  2. Pray for people by name when possible, asking God to give you opportunities to serve, give, and build relationships with them. Prayerfully follow through.
  3. Pray for God’s blessings and protection on each home and family.
  4. Pray that God would open hearts and create a hunger to know Him.
  5. Pray for homes that are for sale:

a. Remove and keep out all evil
b. Move in those hungry to know Christ
c. Move in and raise up vibrant believers to join your study

We are Christ’s ambassadors in our neighborhoods. God has a purpose for where you live! Scripture tells us in Acts 17:26-31 that God not only determines the times we are to live, but also the places where we live, work, and play. You are Jesus “with skin on” to your neighbors. Remember the most loving thing you can do for your neighbors is to pray for them and introduce them to Christ.

Using the Lord’s Prayer as your guide, walk the streets of your neighborhood and pray quietly. If there are other Christians in your neighborhood, walk and pray together. This is a powerful, yet simple, tool.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name

  • Praise God as you begin.
  • Use the alphabet as your guide: God you are almighty, abundant. God you are benevolent, big, beside me….

Thy Kingdom come

  • Acknowledge the lordship of Christ over your neighborhood.
  • Visualize a spotlight shining into each house you pass. Let it represent a picture of God’s love drawing your neighbors to Him.
  • Pray for salvation and spiritual awakening!

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

  • Pray God’s will to be accomplished in the neighborhood.

Give us this day our daily bread

  • Pray for the provision of basic needs for each family.
  • Visualize a sprinkler of blessings covering each home.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us

  • Pray for reconciliation with God and others.
  • Pray that walls are broken down – marriages, families, racial differences.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

  • Pray that God would cast out and keep out all evil from your neighborhood.
  • Pray that all the believers would be “salt and light” to those around them.

For Thine is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever!

  • Proclaim His Kingdom, power, and glory over your neighborhood.
  • Pray that God’s presence would be seen and experienced!
