Do We See the Polka Dot or the Poster Board?

Do We See the Polka Dot or the Poster Board?

Remember these lines from the old hymn “Count Your Blessings?”

Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

By counting your blessings you multiply your joy. It’s true! Throughout Scripture, God’s people are encouraged and commanded to remember, record and retell the wonders, miracles and blessings of the Lord.

Imagine displaying in your kitchen a white poster board with a small pink dot on it.  What do you think your kids would say if you pointed to the poster and asked, “What do you see?”  You guessed it!  They’d respond, “A pink dot.”  Rarely would they say, “The poster board.”

Count Your Blessings 3James 1:3 NLT says, “Consider it all joy my brethren, when you encounter various (polka dotted) trials…”  Our tendency is to focus on the “polka dots” — the trials, troubles and struggles of life — and to miss the vastness of God’s goodness, faithfulness and blessings.

How can we train ourselves to see the poster board?

Try counting your blessings. Wouldn’t it be exciting to leave your family with a legacy of blessings, stories of answered prayer, examples of God’s faithfulness and records of your personal thanks to God for His blessings to you and your family?

Why not make a Family Blessing Jar? It’s easy! Choose a jar and put it in a place where it will be seen by all. Leave slips of paper and a pen next to it. Encourage your family to write down their blessings and deposit them in the jar throughout the year.

Here’s another idea:  On Christmas morning before your family opens gifts, consider giving the contents of the Blessing Jar to Jesus as His gift.  Take turns reading God’s blessings of that year and giving thanks. Then put the slips of paper in an envelope marked with that year and begin the New Year with the empty jar. Yes, count your many blessings one by one and see what God has done!
