Impossible, Crazy and a Waste of Time

Impossible, Crazy and a Waste of Time

When I was growing up, our family went on many camping vacations. After we helped set up the tent and unload the station wagon, my brother and I would head out to collect wood for the campfire. We collected everything from small sticks to large limbs. When we had a pile of wood gathered, Dad would get out his ax and begin to chop the wood to fill the fire pit. I loved watching his strong arm swing the ax and split the wood. He made it look effortless!

Can you imagine him trying to split the wood or chop down a tree with just an ax handle?

It would keep him busy and expend a lot of energy but accomplish little. Why? Because it’s impossible, crazy and a waste of time! In the same way, trying to do anything in my flesh, strength or ability, apart from being surrendered to and empowered by the Holy Spirit….is like trying to chop down a tree with an ax handle – impossible, crazy and waste of time!

“It’s not my might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord. Zechariah 4:6

“You will receive power, when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” Acts 1:8

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in Me and I in them, will produce much fruit. But apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

Why do I try to live the Christian life in my own power? It’s impossible! Why do I attempt anything apart from Christ? It’s crazy! Why do I try to produce fruit in my own effort? It’s a waste of time!
