Endangered Sea Turtles...It’s not what you think

One of my favorite things to do in the spring while visiting my parents in South Florida is to beach walk. I love adding to my collection of heart rocks and shells. As I walk, I will see a number of mounds of sand surrounded by yellow “caution” tape, indicating an endangered sea turtle nest.

Ever wonder why they are endangered? It’s not what you think! It’s not because of predators, humans or pollution…..it’s because of artificial light.

This is so amazing….God designed a sea turtle to hatch at full moon. Have you seen the moon’s brilliant path of light from the horizon to the beach? When the turtles are born, the moonlight guides them to their natural habitat– the ocean. Life for a sea turtle is in the water.

Researchers were amazed to find tiny sea turtles dead at the end of zig zag trails between the full moon’s lighted path and all the artificial light streaming from beach residences, lights and traffic. The sea turtles were drawn to their death by following the artificial light.

Psalm 119:105 says, “The Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

One of the reasons I choose to daily read, meditate and apply God’s Word to my life is that I can easily detect the artificial light (interesting, Satan is called an angel of light in II Cor. 11:14) and remain on God’s lighted path.

II Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching (lights my path), rebuking (shows me where I’ve have gotten off the lighted path), correcting (shows me how to get back on the lighted path) and training in righteousness (shows me how to stay on the lighted path).”

I’m wondering….have true followers of Jesus Christ become an “endangered species” in your neighborhood or community? What artificial light draws you away from the true Light of Life?
